India today lost one of the most prominent leaders of the socialist movement of the 70's, George Fernandes.
A senior Janata Dal leader who later on went to start the Samata Party, Fernandes had been unwell and was bedridden last few years. He served as India's Defence Minister from 1998 to 2004 under the leadership of Atal Bihari Bajpayee. It was during his tenure that India went to war at Kargil. Fernandes had also held several ministerial portfolios including communications, industry and railways in the NDA government.
