While the whole nation was in a festive mood last night, gathering with families to watch Raavan effigy in flames as a symbol of win over the evil, a train accident in Amritsar shook all of us.
Over 60 deaths and at least 51 people have been reported injured so far in the accident that took place between Manawala and Ferozpur stations near Amritsar. The train, reportedly, ran through the crowd that had assembled at a ground near the Joda Phatak to witness 'Raavan Dahan'.
A report by PTI claimed that there were over 300 people on the spot and the dead also included children. It further said that the victims reportedly could not hear the hooting of the train due to the exploding crackers.
"The people were sitting on and near the tracks on the outskirts of Amritsar watching the burning of effigies as part of the Dussehra festival when a commuter train ran over them," a police officer told Reuters.
